Many people just have a dog because they are afraid to live by themselves and want a dog to guard them. I have a friend like this. People like this don't spend any time walking their dog, playing ball with their dog or even cuddling with them. Both the dog and the owner miss so much that life together has to offer.
Pet behaviorists agree that it is so important for you and your dog to play together. It encourages bonding and will strengthen the understanding and respect between you and your dog.
The simplest game that you can play with your dog is "fetch". This is an easy way to teach your dog to follow directions and play a game with you. Getting them to "drop" the ball or stick when they bring it back is the hardest part.
Take your dog for a walk. Don't rush them. Let them sniff every bush, tree and whatever along the way. Just enjoy watching them have so much fun. Even if you have a fenced in yard your dog will still love to go for a walk with you.
Take your dog for a ride in the car. Most every dog loves to go for a ride. Some like to hang their head out the window and enjoy the wind in their face. Those who ride motorcycles have found that their dog even loves to ride in a carrier on the bike with them.
Dogs love to go hiking with their owners. They will even carry their own stuff if you will get them a doggie backpack. They can carry their own bowl, food, water and blanket. If you spend the night when hiking and it is a cool evening then you can depend on them to be nice little heaters for you.
Many studies have proven that petting a dog is really good for the elderly in nursing or retirement homes. They have also been known to bring special needs children out of their shell and get them started on a better life.
Dogs are really very social creatures. They love to make you happy and to put a smile on your face. Take time to give them that opportunity. The benefits in it for you are innumerable. |
